Abstract
The male genital capsule is described externally and internally in representatives of the superfamilies Lygaeoidea, Coreoidea, Pyrrhocoroidea and Pentatomoidea. Its external opening, primitively posterior, sometimes becomes dorsal by dorsalization of the posterior edge. The dorsal, lateral and ventral rims of that opening may be more or less inturned. The infolding of the ventral rim lies deep within the capsule and may form a transverse ridge. To this is joined a cuplike sclerite which holds the median projection. These 3 internal structures support and guide the aedeagus. From a discussion of the capsule itself and of the preceding segments and intersegmental membranes, it follows that the capsule is probably the ninth sternum, the corresponding tergum having been totally or in major part obliterated by the growing dorsally of the anterior part of the sternum. The terms used by some other authors for the structures studied are discussed and synonymized.
