Abstract
That spiral grain, together with interlocked and wavy grain, are under a con- siderable degree of genetic control is self-evident. Some species, such as Pinus roxburghii are notorious for developing severe spiral grain, whereas others like Fagus sylvatica are usually straight-grained. Similarly, whole genera such as Entandrophragma and Eucalyptus contain many species in which interlocked grain is normal, whereas it is completely absent from other genera. Even wavy grain, though apparently not inevitable in any individual tree, is regularly encountered in some species, whereas there are others in which its presence has never been recorded.
