Abstract

Lyophilized culture filtrates of formae speciales of Fusarium oxysporum, a saprophyte assigned to this species, and F. xylarioides contained pectin methylesterase (PME), esterases, and phosphatases which were separated by starch-gel zone electrophoresis. The sites of PME activity appeared to be the same for the tested filtrates. Filtrates from different cultures gave from two to nine sites of esterase activity. Relatively few sites of phosphatase activity were detected. Cultures grown with pectin or sucrose as the carbon source gave markedly different patterns of sites of esterase activity. The patterns of sites of esterase and phosphatase activity appeared to characterize different taxa.
