Abstract
It is easy to understand man’s interest in diseases of humans. Each of us has been, or very likely will be, directly affected by one or more diseases in our lifetime. Man’s interest in diseases of plants is derived from our need for food and fiber in abundant and steady supply. The philosophy of control of diseases is quite different for man and for plants. The basic philosophy in the research on control of diseases of humans, and other animals, is to halt the progress of disease and save the life of the individual. An important philosophy of research on control of diseases of plants is to discard the diseased individual and breed a new, disease-resistant plant to replace the diseased individual. One result of the latter is that considerable kowledge is now available about the inheritance of disease resistance in plants. Breeding for disease resistance has frequently led to the discovery of physiological races of pathogens, and also studies on the inheritance of virulence in plant pathogens.
