Abstract

1. 1. Phylogenetically diploid and tetraploid species of the fish orders Ostariophysi and Isospondyli were examined for phosphoglucose isomerase (PGI) using starch gel electrophoresis. 2. 2. The number of genes coding for PGI is 1 or 2 in diploid species, and ranges between 2 and 4 in the tetraploids. 3. 3. The tissue distribution of PGI isoenzymes is almost identical in all the species analysed.
