Abstract
Ptilimnium nodosum (Rose) Mathias, commonly known as harperella, is a member of the Carrot Family (Apiaceae). It is a federally listed endangered plant native to seasonally flooded rocky streams in Maryland, West Virginia, North Carolina, Alabama, and Arkansas, and coastal plain ponds in South Carolina and Georgia. In the past, P. nodosum had been divided into three species, P. viviparum(Rose) Mathias, P. fluviatile (Rose) Mathias, and P. nodosum sensu stricto, which were considered geographically and ecologically distinct (see Maddox & Bartgis [1991] for a complete review of the taxonomic history). The first two species are riverine ecotypes that grow on sandy shoals or, rarely, on muddy banks of seasonally flooded and quickly moving streams in Maryland, West Virginia, North Carolina (P. viviparum), Alabama, and Arkansas
