Abstract

Abstract Solanum muricatum (pepino or melon pear) is a small, herbaceous, perennial shrub that is native to the northern Andes region of South America, and is closely related to the potato and tomato (Lester 1991). The fruit (see Fig. 1) vary from round to elongate, are 5 to 20 cm in length, and usually weigh 100 to 300 g. As the fruit matures, the thin skin turns from green to yellow and purple stripes develop. The flavour can vary considerably, but at their best the fruits are juicy with a sweet, aromatic taste and a texture similar to that of rock melon (Dawes and Pringle 1983).KeywordsTransgenic PlantNPTII GeneLeft BorderLeaf PieceParthenocarpic FruitThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
