Abstract
The marine amphipods Gammarus salinus and G. oceanicus are both polymorphic at the enzyme loci glucosephosphate isomerase (Gpi), glutamic-pyruvic transaminase (Gpi), and mannosephosphate transaminase (Mpi). In addition, G. solinus is polymorphic at the glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase locus Gotl. The variation at these loci is described for populations ranging from the Limfjord, Denmark, to the Baltic Sea at Askô, Sweden. In both species the Baltic populations and the Kattegat populations have diverged from each other. The populations are connected through gene frequency clines that can be smooth (at the Gpi locus in both species) or more irregular (at the Mpi locus in both species).
