Abstract

<p class="awabstrak2">Forage crops are planted mostly in marginal land or integrated with other crops. Estate crops land is one of the alternative areas for forage crops plantation. Shortage of forage crops development under crop plantation is caused by limited light intensity, due to crop shading. Selecting forage crops adapted to estate crops plantation is crusial to achieve its high production and quality. Several grasses and legumes have been identified as forage crops that tolerant to shading of less than 40%, 40-60% and more than 60% light intensity. Some of them have been applied in the area of oil palm plantation to support the acceleration of livestock population.</p>

PERANAN TANAMAN PAKAN TERNAK DALAM BIDANG PETERNAKAN

Peternakan di Indonesia adalah peternakan rakyat yang mempunyai kepemilikan ternak skala kecil serta penguasaan lahan sempit dan biasanya terintegrasi dengan tanaman pangan, hortikultura, perkebunan maupun kehutanan. Walaupun petani menyadari bahwa dalam usaha peternakan khususnya ruminansia memerlukan TPT sebagai sumber pakan kebutuhan pokok dan para peternak sering dihadapkan pada permasalahan kekurangan penyediaan pakan ternak secara kontinyu untuk memenuhi kebutuhan ternak baik jumlah maupun kualitasnya. Salah satu cara dengan memanfaatkan keragaman SDG TPT yang ada di Indonesia, terutama jenis yang unggul pada musim kemarau dan juga cocok untuk agroekologi spesifik. Perlu dicari TPT rumput dan leguminosa yang dapat beradaptasi pada kondisi kering dan tanah yang relatif miskin hara dan lokasi agroekologi spesifik marjinal dan lainnya misalnya di areal perkebunan. TPT tersebut juga dapat digunakan sebagai cover crops (tanaman penutup tanah) di areal perkebunan, tanaman reklamasi di tanah yang terdegradasi baik oleh erosi maupun oleh pencemaran bahan beracun salinitas tinggi dan lain-lain. Diharapkan dengan makin luas kegunaan TPT, maka makin beragam juga para penggunanya
