Abstract

Previous research on mice of the genus Peromyscus led to the conclusion that populations of these animals may be highly inbred. In this paper, the mating system of one species, Peromyscus polionotus, is studied by analysis of five biochemical polymorphisms in 221 monogamous pairs collected in the field. There is no evidence in the statistical tests of a deviation from random mating. Most reports of inbreeding in populations of Peromyscus are ambiguous and can be explained readily by forces other than inbreeding.
