Abstract

Bacteria of the family Rhizobiaceae have been studied for nearly 50 years. The main feature which attracted scientists was their ability to form nitrogen-fixing nodules on roots of leguminous plants. Until recently, all root nodule bacteria were considered to be members of the genus Rhizobium. Now they are reclassified into five genera: Rhizobium, Bradyrhizohium, Azorhizobium, Sinorhizohium, and Photorhizobium. The current knowledge of the symbiotic functions of nodule bacteria is based principally on the study of Rhizobium and Bradyrhizohium. Consequently, this review will deal mostly with the results obtained from these two species. When considering questions common to all, nodule bacteria will be referred to as Rhizohium or rhizobia.
