Abstract
The accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) on 26 April 1986 resulted in extensive contamination of the environment from the Unit 4 reactor. A cloud consisting of a complex mixture of radionuclides, with different radiological properties, was released into the atmosphere for at least 10 days. The Chernobyl NPP is located in Ukrainian territory close to the borders of Russia and Belorus. The scale of the radiation emergency was so large that, by 14 May 1986, the entire human population had been evacuated from the 30-km radius exclusion zone around the reactor. The largest city in the 30-km zone was Prip’at, with a population of 49,360. This population consisted mainly of the staff of the Chernobyl NPP and members of their families. In addition, many thousands of workers, called liquidators, were drafted in the ensuing months and years to undertake a variety of clean-up and other tasks inside the affected regions.
