Abstract

Low serum concentrations of HDL-cholesterol are well established markers for a high risk to develop coronary artery disease. The absence of coronary artery disease symptoms from some individuals with familial HDL deficiency demonstrates the presence of heterogeneity in this relation and points to an important role of etiologic and modifying factors.
