Abstract

Abstract The standard plant habit in cucumbers is indeterminate (vine). A determinate form in which the shoot apex stops growing after producing a given number of leaves has the genotype de/de. Two determinate lines, one with low and the other with high leaf numbers were developed from this form. The difference in leaf number of these lines is due to a single gene which modifies the expression of de. The line with low leaf number has the genotype de/de, In(de)/In(de) and the line with high leaf number de/de, in(de)/in(de). Gene In(de) also reduces plant height by shortening internode length. Winter conditions of short daylength, low light intensity and low temperature decrease leaf number and plant height in both lines.
