Abstract

Prostaglandins (PGs) and thromboxane (TX) are the cyclooxygenase metabolites of arachidonic acid and are collectively termed prostanoids. The roles of prostanoids in our body have been examined by comparing the effects of aspirin-like drugs that inhibit cyclooxygenase, with those of prostanoids added exogenously. However, such studies do not clearly indicate which type of prostanoid is involved in a given process, and how critical the actions of prostanoids might be. To address these questions, others and we have generated mice deficient in each prostanoid receptor. Here we review the findings of these studies and discuss the roles of prostanoids in animal physiology and pathology.
