Abstract

Fine-structure mapping and complementation analysis of the ompB locus indicate that this locus is comprised of two genes, envZ and ompR. These genes are ordered on the chromosome as follows: aroB-envZ-ompR-asd. A model is proposed for the ompB-mediated regulation of the major outer membrane porin genes, ompF and ompC. According to this model, the ompR gene product is a bifunctional regulatory protein. The envZ gene product is an envelope protein that senses the cell's external environment.
