Abstract

Allocation of Var compensator is important for improving voltage profile, transmission flexibility, line stability, etc. as well as reducing transmission loss. In this paper, an IEEE 15 bus system is chosen to test genetic algorithm-based optimization technique to find out optimum location and size of the Var compensator. The optimization technique is applied again in steady-state after putting through the test system into islanding situation. Unlike the other genetic algorithm-based optimization technique published in established literature, the proposed technique does not allow two king chromosomes (having highest fitness values) for mating with the other chromosomes. The decrease in transmission loss and improvement in stability index are testified. Finally, the voltage profiles are validated from phasor measurements.
