Abstract

Abstract Calcitic features and calcic horizons from two exposures from the Loess plateau and its southern edges, near Xian were studied in thin sections, under SEM and with X-Ray microprobe. Hypo-coatings, equigranular infillings and needle-shaped coatings directly related to biological activity and independant of other calcitic features are present only in the Holocene soil and paleosols of Late and Middle Pleistocene age. Nodules, the most common feature, result from micritic impregnation of the loessic groundmass. Dissolution features are rare in comparison to various forms of accumulation. All studied calcitic features and calcic horizons, even the petrocalcic horizons, are monophased.
