Abstract

Field ionization measurements (FIK) of several deuterium-labelled n-pentylbenzene derivatives demonstrate that the hydrogen transfer from the side chain in the formation of C 7H 8 +− occurs via five-, six- and seven-membered transition states. At the shortest measurable life times ( t < 10 −10 s) this elimination is not preceded by a hydrogen exchange process between the side chain and the ortho positions (degenerated isomerizations), whereas at 10 −5 s extensive, but not complete, exchange processes are of special importance.
