Abstract
Mutations of Schizosaccharomyces pombe are described, which change homothallism to heterothallism without affecting the mating type locus itself. The genetic block was effective at the level of agglutinated cells in two instances, or before that in two other cases. Mutations of particular interest affected meiosis as well, when homozygous diploid strains were constructed. In these strains azygotic meiosis was inducible by the addition of h + cells, even in the absence of cellular fusion.
