Abstract

Issues concerning generic special education teacher preparation programs have been discussed for more than 30 years. Literature on the topic contains little empirical data to support reasons for or against the issue. A national survey was conducted to determine the opinions of state directors of special education and special education teacher educators about generic teacher preparation. The 15-item questionnaire was designed to address some unresolved issues concerning generic special education teacher preparation. The results showed varying levels of agreement and disagreement between the two groups of educators. The findings support the contention that there are still some unresolved issues related to this topic.
