Abstract

We discuss various qualitative aspects related to the Hall conductance of finite systems. We consider general, multiparticle hamiltonians with no symmetries. The identification of the Hall conductance with a first Chern character, its geometrical content and a theorem developed by Wigner and von Neumann on level crossing play key roles in the analysis.
