Abstract

This workshop was attended by about twenty participants, most of them actively participating in the discussion. A project being undertaken by the International Association for Plant Taxonomy (IAPT) is to produce lists of generic names in current use for all groups treated as plants under the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature. The aims of this project are to protect names in current use from being threatened or displaced by names no longer in use and to eliminate uncertainties regarding their application, spelling, gender, date and place of publication. Names included in the proposed lists would be treated as if conserved against earlier unlisted homonyms or competing synonyms. These lists would have to be approved by an International Botanical Congress upon recommendation by the General Committee.
