Abstract
The prime protection in a synchronous generator is the Loss of Excitation (LOE) protection. LOE causes damages to the generator as well as the power system. The impedance-based positive and negative offset mho relays are used for the fast detection of the LOE phenomenon in the system. The protection relays get maloperated when FACTS devices implemented in the system. The presence of FACTS controller changes the value of the total impedance. It is necessary to modify the relay settings for the accurate functioning of relays. The change in the system's total impedance causes overreaching and underreaching of a relay. This article explains and compares both the types of mho relays with their settings. The simulation model is implemented in MATLAB to scrutinize the influence of STATCOM on offset mho (positive and negative) relay LOE protection. In conclusion, this article summarizes the advantage and disadvantages of both types of relay schemes.
