Abstract

A theoretical analysis is given for the temporal characteristics of optical pulses subject to self-phase modulation (SPM) in nonlinear media with a fast response time shorter than the optical period. The pulse shortening properties of these pulses in linear dispersive media are also calculated. The results are shown to be applicable to the generation of extremely short optical pulses in the subpicosecond and femtosecond ranges. A comparison with the other case based on conventional SPM with a much slower response is given.
