Abstract

An effective and practical method of forming low kinetic energy, high density state electrons in relativistic magnetron (RM) is proposed. By using a novel cathode structure, virtual cathode (VC) can be generated directly in a RM with almost all the output structure without magnetic mirror or radius variation, which lays a foundation for further experimental researches on RM driven by VC. Particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation results show that when this novel cathode structure is used in an L-band all cavity axial extraction (ACAE) RM, an average output power of 700 MW with a power conversion efficiency of 61.4% can be achieved under a diode voltage of 600 kV.
