Abstract
A new version of impulse current generator (ICG) was designed, simulated and constructed. The advantage of this research work is that it provides details of a micro-scale ICG simulation using two different software which is capable of producing lightning impulse current with amplitude in the order of ampere to several kiloamperes complying with the IEC standard. By taking the advantages of previously built large scale impulse current generators, the present prototype increases the electrostatic energy stored in the smoothing capacitors which are connected in parallel with the full wave bridge rectifier to produce high amplitude impulse current. The obtained current impulse has a characteristic that satisfy IEC recommendations for all parameters required. The constructed micro-scale ICG is useful for educational and engineering applications particularly in testing of surge arrester and cables.
