Abstract

The generation of coherent phonons upon photon-induced pair breaking observed by Kutt, Albrecht, and Kurz in superconducting ${\mathrm{YBa}}_{2}$${\mathrm{Cu}}_{3}$${\mathrm{O}}_{7\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}\mathit{x}}$ may be taken as evidence of a role of static deformations in the binding of Cooper pairs, as recently proposed by the present authors. Quantitatively, the size of the lattice deformation brought on by superconductivity as observed by neutron scattering is consistent with the authors' hypothesis.
