Abstract

To the Editor:— Dr. James A. Tobey, in The Physician Who Was Nominated for President, inThe Journal, May 21, page 296, omitted one unusual feature in his biography of Leonard Wood. In 1923 General Wood was appointed provost of the University of Pennsylvania, a post he held for one year, although he never appeared on or near the campus for one second during that time. Dr. Tobey evinces some surprise that Black Jack Pershing was promoted from captain to brigadier general over the heads of 862 officers who outranked him. It was perfectly simple. Captain Pershing had married the daughter of Senator Warren, who was the chairman of the Senate Armed Forces Committee.
