Abstract

The Witt-Burnside ring, as contrived by A. Dress and C. Siebeneicher ( Adv. in Math. 70, 1988, 87-132), is a generalisation of the ring of Witt vectors. In this paper, we characterise this ring algorithmically, generalising the carryless Witt vectors described by N. Metropolis and G. C. Rota ( Adv. in Math. 50, 1983, 95-125). This approach has the merit of simplifying Dress′ main theorem which asserts the existence of this ring, and a few properties that characterise it. It also makes the definition of Rota′s carryless Witt vectors more natural.
