Abstract

Classical solutions are found for twisted and untwisted scalar fields in spacetimes which are spatially compact with the topology of the torus. Previous work which considered a quartic Higgs-type interaction is generalized by considering an additional ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\varphi}}}^{6}$ interaction. The spatial translational invariance of the twisted ground state is broken once the size of the torus increases beyond a certain critical value. Unexpectedly there exists a bifurcation of the solutions when the coefficient of the ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\varphi}}}^{6}$ term exceeds a critical value.
