Abstract

A 31-year-old male presented with annular erythema of various sizes on the trunk and upper limbs, spreading centrifugally with scaly margins and central receding (Figure 1A). He was first misdiagnosed with allergic dermatitis and erythema annulare. Later, a large number of fungal spores and hyphae were observed from a KOH smear of skin scrapings (Figure 1D) and histological examination (Figure 1F). Trichophyton verrucosum (GenBank accession number OK287073) was confirmed by internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequencing on the culture-negative scales, and a diagnosis of tinea corporis caused by T.
