Abstract

Certain spaces considered in the quantum theory of gravity do not allow fermion fields to be defined consistently. However one can still obtain generalized spin structures by coupling the fermions to electromagnetic or Yang-Mills fields. This raises the interesting possibility that there may be a connexion between the topology of space-time and the spectrum of elementary particles.
