Abstract

An earlier investigation, by the same authors, of the effect of temperature-dependent thermal conductivity on the transient temperature distribution of heated materials has been generalized and refined. The results from a numerical solution of the one-dimensional plate problem described by the conditions of uniform initial temperatures with constant and equal step-function boundary temperatures were correlated exactly by dimensional analysis and presented in a form quite similar to the Heisler charts. The materials considered were again assumed to have thermal conductivities which varied linearly with temperature and constant volumetric specific heats. The solutions clearly illustrate the effect of variable conductivity and provide a simple, accurate method for comparing the thermal behavior of a variety of materials for the same conditions.
