Abstract

The formulation of the relativistic Doppler effect is discussed for arbitrary motion of source and observer. Use is made of an intuitive approach done in the reference frame of the medium. The effects of time retardation and dispersion are investigated. It is shown that the general formula presented herein can be readily derived from a less useful standard formula appearing in the literature. The classical Doppler and relativistic optical Doppler effects are deduced as corollaries.
