Abstract

A 1-year-old infant with preexisting atopic eczema who developed a generalized vesicular exanthem resembling Kaposi's varicelliform eruption was studied. Virological, serological and cytological studies were compatible with a coxsackievirus A16 infection, while no evidence of infection with herpes simplex, vaccinia, or varicella viruses could be obtained. The term eczema coxsackium is proposed and the suggestion is made to search for other viral agents that may affect eczematous or other dermatological conditions.
