Abstract

The Danckwerts boundary conditions for the axial dispersion model predict concentration profiles which are unrealistic when the dispersion coefficient is determined mainly by convection rather than by diffusion. Modified boundary conditions have been suggested as a simple means of overcoming this limitation. These are explored in a systematic way which introduces two new adjustable parameters in the model. Time-domain and Laplace-domain solutions for the residence time distribution are given. The new parameters can be found from inert tracer experiments just as the Peclet number is found. Differences between the modified model and the standard model exist for axial Peclet numbers less than 16.
