Abstract

SUMMARYFor estimation of the mean number of objects per unit area from observations in a bounded region (sampling window) T in the plane, a generalized associated point method is discussed. By this method, m points are associated with each object, and an object with k associated points inside T is counted with weight k/m. A general formula for the variance of the estimator is derived and explicit expressions are given for Poisson and hard‐core models for the spatial distribution of objects in the plane.
