Abstract

The physical meaning of the generalised radiant emittance is not trivial. Indeed, its energy values should describe the local emission properties of planar sources in any state of spatial coherence, but they can take on positive and negative values mainly within the non-paraxial region. The recent phase-space modelling of optical fields in terms of radiant and virtual layers of point sources is used as framework for analysing the nature of the generalised radiant emittance in order to give more insight on its physical meaning.
