Abstract

A quantitative measure of lexical entrenchment is introduced as an operational definition of onomasiological salience. It is shown on the basis of corpus-based data that the taxonomical basic level hypothesis introduced by Berlin is not entirely adequate as a model for the variation that exists in lexical entrenchment values
