Abstract

We analyze all possible patterns of symmetry breaking from SO(10) to SU(2) L × SU(2) L × U(1) Y in the left-right decomposition with one intermediate energy scale. We use two-loop renormalization-group equations to find the allowed neutral-current couplings at low energy in each case, and compare these with experiment to deduce the allowed domains for the intermediate and grand-unification energy scales, from which we estimate the allowed range of lifetimes for proton decay.
