Abstract

A general solution applicable to the bending analysis of rectangular orthotropic sandwich plates is presented. By “general solution”, it is meant that the expression for the displacement vector includes, in explicit form, the boundary values of the statical quantities. The transverse contraction of the orthotropic core as well as the bending stiffness of the facings are considered. The variational principle is applied so that the natural boundary conditions as well as the displacement equations of equilibrium are obtained. Double finite Fourier transformations are employed to obtain a general solution for the displacements. In particular, Levy-type boundary conditions are considered and the solution for a simply-supported isotropic sandwich plate with given edge displacements is derived.
