Abstract
Preliminary design of a flexible barrier system requires understanding in structural strength of the barrier and occupant safety of the design vehicle. Parametric study to find a relation between structural stiffness and safety indices which are specified in NCHRP Repot 350 are made using sine curve approximation for acceleration of vehicle impacting to flexible barrier with various impact speeds. It is found that influencing factors to the safety index are the secondary impact time and the amplitude of the assumed acceleration curve at the rebound phase. The acceleration of two extreme cases of elastic and perfectly plastic impacts with varying impact speeds and specific stiffness are analyzed for the safety indices and the relations between structural stiffness, impact time and safety indices are presented.
