Abstract

Abstract + Background: Physiotherapy means systematic method of assisting cardio-respiratory musculoskeletal-neurological including pain and psychosomatic disease to prevent illness by the way of manual therapy and physical ability. The investigator has found that public frequently confuses the functions of physiotherapists with those of other health professionals. The knowledge regarding physical therapy appears to be inclusive in our country due to lack of evidence based publications. Objectives: To find out the knowledge of physical therapy among general population, comparison of it between males and females and to identify the sources of public’s information about physical therapy in general population. Design: Questionnaire form survey method. Study Settings: People residing in and around the Bangalore. Method: The study sample consisted of 300 subjects who are residing in and around Jayanagar, Bangalore. A detailed self-administered validated questionnaire including close ended questions was given to assess the knowledge of physical therapy among the population and identify the sources of public’s information. Results: Various factors have been identified as a possible reason for low knowledge among the population among which low level of education and less access to mass media sources is found to be a major contributor. Conclusion: The knowledge about physical therapy is considerably low in Hongasandra, in Bangalore. The factors noted in this survey for low knowledge were in accordance with most literature findings. The significant decrease in knowledge requires more amount of knowledge to be given in the surrounding area.
