Abstract
Some of the general principles to be followed in ‘taking-off’ building quantities are detailed in the ‘General Rules’ in Section A of the Standard Method of Measurement of Building Works. The following clause is of particular importance: ‘Bills of Quantities shall fully describe and accurately represent the works to be executed. Work which cannot be measured accurately shall be described as provisional or given in a bill of approximate quantities’ (S.M.M., clause Al).
