Abstract

The laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) is one of the several weight loss procedures performed in the USA today. The history of gastric banding dates back to 1978 when Dr. Wilkinson wrapped a Marlex mesh around a portion of the stomach to create a smaller gastric pouch. The first gastric banding in the USA was performed in 1980 in Texas by Dr. Molina with Dacron material [1]. Since the work of these pioneers, many technological advances have been made, and the band material is currently made from silicone. There are currently two laparoscopic adjustable bands in the market, the LAP-BAND System by Allergan and the REALIZE Band produced by Johnson & Johnson.
