Abstract
General health needs of migrants and refugees describes health problems while they are ‘on the move’, on arrival, and during their early settlement. The process of migration may increase their vulnerability to physical, mental, and social health issues. This chapter reviews common health problems on arrival in migrants and refugees usually related to situations in their country of origin, the journey, and during early settlement, including communicable and non-communicable diseases. The chapter also discusses barriers to access of health care, such as a lack of awareness of legal entitlements, socio-economic conditions, linguistic and cultural differences, and challenges confronted by healthcare professionals. Recommendations are also included regarding the provision of primary health care services by well-trained interdisciplinary teams, screening and immunization.
