Abstract

General anaesthesia produces immobilization, relaxation, unconsciousness and freedom from pain. It is therefore a vital component of the humanitarian care of veterinary surgical patients as well as ensuring technical efficiency and protection of personnel from bites, scratches or kicks. A wide range of anaesthetic techniques are used as a wide range of species are anaesthetized, and veterinary anaesthetists need to consider not only the anatomical and physiological differences between species but also the fact that there are often marked variations in response between breeds within each species. This article aims to give a brief insight into the anaesthesia of horses and cattle.
