Abstract

Dr. Gene Sharp directs the Program on Nonviolent Sanctions in Conflict and Defense at Harvard University's Center for International Affairs and is president of the Albert Einstein Institution, a foundation dedicated to research on the potential of nonviolent sanctions against political violence. He is the author of numerous publications on the subject of nonviolent struggle, especially: The Politics of Nonviolent Action (three volumes), Social Power and Political Freedom, Gandhi as a Political Strategist, and Making Europe Unconquerable: The Potential of Civilian-based Deterrence and Defense. Arabic and Hebrew translations of an introduction to his work Nonviolent Resistance have been issued in Jerusalem entitled: Al-Muqawamah Bila 'Unf, published by the Palestinian Center for the Study of Nonviolence, and Hitnagdut Lo Alima, published by Mifras Publishing House. This extended interview with Dr. Gene Sharp was conducted in March 1986 and March 1987 by Afif Safieh, a Palestinian Visiting Scholar at Harvard University's Center for International Affairs.
