Abstract

Surveying the literature, gene frequency data on 10∼18 protein loci were collected from six caste populations of north India as well as from two linguistically different populations (Marathis and Gujaratis) and two migrant populations (Parsis and Iranis) in west India. The average heterozygosity per locus of protein loci in all these populations is found to vary from 8 to 11%. The gene differences between individuals from different populations are only slightly higher than those between individuals from the same population. Only 1 % of the total gene diversity (heterozygosity) is attributable between populations.
